Self-assertion of personality - what is it, the concept in psychology

Self-assertion is the individual's need forself-awareness of oneself at the desired level in the social, psychological and physical spheres. The meaning of the word self-affirmation-indicates the process leading to the formation of a picture of the real, desired or imagined, affirmed by the individual in the future.
Self-assertion of the person is realized both through real actions, achievements, and illusions, when the result is either verbally attributed or re-evaluated, being objectively less significant.
Self-assertion is in psychology a dynamicA process that involves a constant testing of reality. Being a social being, a person needs continuity of the society and development does not happen independently. The basic criteria are public standards and representations. Partially they are internalized by the individual, which is determined by the personal orientation,
, in the defined sphere of achievements, for
group.
The notion of self-affirmation often has a negative color, since its realization is associated with pathological behavioral strategies.

What is self-affirmation?

The need for self-assertion is actualizedtentatively at the age of three, when the child seeks to differentiate himself from the environment, the "I" is actively used in speech (I myself, I want). This stage is also associated with a certain negativism, especially in relation to parents, since the assertion of oneself is connected with activity that is op positional to a close environment, especially if the internal criteria do not correspond to the declared rules.
Later, a person gets acquainted with the criteria of the society, determines which social stratum he wants to enter and plans his behavior accordingly.
Self-assertion of personality is a psychological process, which includes components of both social and personal aspects. Although the criteria for purposes are more often provided by society,
can in a certain way, accepting and approving certain and dislodging the unwanted. This happens both consciously and purposefully, but, fundamentally, unconsciously, when a person declares an unwillingness to "play by the rules of the society" and thereby affirms himself in the group "not playing by the rules", where there are also regularities.
A healthy will to self-assertion is natural for a person, speaks about the qualities of the nervous system,
, the level of striving for self-destruction. The level of claims that an individual determines for himself as sufficient, demonstrates his strength, adaptability, survival. Since any organism is guided by the principle of saving energy, the need for self-affirmation, as an incentive to action, is one of the motivating features of the action.
The need for self-affirmation of a person, depending on the skills, abilities, upbringing and
will stimulate a certain type of behavior andstrategy to meet the need. These strategies can be both constructive and irrational. Constructive self-assertion aimed at
, development of its potential. Unreasonable can be considered as an aggressive strategy, in the context of which the need for self-assertion is at the expense of others, and the strategy of self-suppression, when there is a refusal of self-affirmation. The latter is self-destructive, since the psyche is not static, not developing, it degrades and simplifies, which can promote disintegration at the physical level, provoking somatic dysfunctions. Compensatory strategy for self-assertion of the personality is characterized by the fact that, with a real or subjective impossibility of achieving goals in the desired field, the interest is deliberately transferred to a more accessible channel. This is sometimes salutary as a temporary replacement, but dissatisfaction in the disclosure of the sphere will not be completely superseded.

Another version of this strategy can be considered an attachment to another individual or group,
with him (with her) and merit are perceived as their own,the person merges with the other (and). In some cases, this may be the background of identifying yourself with a fairly large group, gender, nation, race. This strategy is also pathological, because it supersedes the need to apply one's own efforts, and in case of a feeling of internal inferiority
is directed to an external source, with whichIdentify, making claims to him in their own small value. This is also an infantile strategy, when the locus of control is transferred outward and removes personal responsibility for one's own
.
The relevance of the spheres for self-assertion is different indifferent age, cultural tradition, gender priority. Professional recognition, achievements in science, creativity, business, success in partnering, parental relationships, can be evaluated in different ways in a local time interval and have different significance depending on the values of the social environment.
Ideally, a person has the experience of realizing himself in theeach of them, have the tools for self-realization of themselves without having to do it at someone else's expense. As self-identification, some areas can come to the fore and, a small implementation in others will not be important, but the flexibility of the psyche will allow to be successful in different planes and ensure the stability of the psyche in case of failures. Recognition of merit gives support to society, and personal achievements are introduced into collective baggage and through such a mutually beneficial exchange the communication between "I" and "Others" takes a qualitative and healthy form.
It is important to understand that often, the processSelf-affirmation is isolated in various spheres. Success in one does not guarantee self or public recognition in another. The more spheres are covered and qualitatively developed, the better the general, integrative, sense of self is reinforced.

Self-affirmation at the expense of others

Self-assertion at the expense of others is calledA strategy in which a person appropriates to himself the achievements of other people or depreciates them, increasing his value against their background. This can be due to inability or unwillingness to develop one's own qualities. A person leaves personal responsibility, ignoring the absence of his contribution or manipulating the situation, the situation. This creates a certain
personal self-worth, which is not backed upreal achievements. Such a position is infantile, since another need is needed to satisfy the need, the attitude towards which is consumer and leads to regress of personality. With this line of behavior, a person is aggressive, demanding, can humiliate and insult, devalue others' merits. It is this
behavior is negatively perceived and blamed.
The meaning of the word self-affirmation indicates the priority and desire of a constructive type of self-affirmation. Personality seeks it by revealing their own
, qualities and features. Its value grows in personal perception by increasing confidence, and the society is perceived as successful and strong-willed. This way is more natural and productive, since the individual relies on his own resources, becoming more autonomous.
Self-assertion at the expense of others occurs whena person puts himself in a dependent position, even if he behaves aggressively and humiliates. If a person or group, at whose expense approval is rebuffed, gets out of control or influence, develops its qualities and becomes independent of the aggressor, then it will lose this resource.
Adhering to self-assertion at the expense of others, the personality does not develop, its past achievements, if they were, become obsolete and depreciate, which can subsequently lead to deep disappointment. Apparent, at first glance, lightness of this strategy is deceptive, as it keeps in illusions, not allowing to develop the potential of its "I". In the long term, this is more destructive for the self-assertive than for its victim.
To get rid of this strategy of self-assertion, one must realize the productivity of personal responsibility for
and defining yourself at the desired level. This is a more profitable and adult position, developing value, both in their own eyes and in the public perception.
It is a constructive strategy that colors this phenomenon into a positive spectrum, as it implies personal, well-deserved success, helping others in this context becomes another tool.
